Stress: How it Works, What You Can Do About It

Chronic Stress

Stress… We all experience it now and again, and a little bit isn’t bad. The increased blood pressure and adrenaline rush can help us win a race or deliver an outstanding performance. Then our bodies relax, return to normal and we move on. Unfortunately, though, some of us experience these physical feelings constantly in what’s known as chronic stress.

Stress produces the “fight or flight” response in the human body. The consequences of remaining in a “fight or flight” state (chronic stress) can include high blood pressure, slow healing from injury or illness, damage to muscle tissue, headaches, diabetes and infertility, to name a few. Chronic stress also leads to nerve irritation, definitely leaving the body worse for wear.

Since a never-ending vacation isn’t an option for the majority of us, how can we effectively manage stress? The good news is that while we may not be able to control the stressors affecting our lives all the time, we can control what we do about them. Chiropractic care is an option to help naturally manage the effects of stress on the body.

If you’ve been incorporating chiropractic care into your overall wellness strategy, you’re familiar with the musculoskeletal adjustments chiropractors do and how these release muscle tension that helps the body return to a more balanced, relaxed state. Adjustments also reduce spinal nerve irritation and improve blood circulation. For many, reducing irritation and improving circulation can be enough to convince the brain to turn off the “fight or flight” response and begin the healing process. A healthy and balanced spine is a key ingredient to effectively managing stress.

If you believe you are experiencing chronic stress in your life and/or have symptoms such as those mentioned above, talk to a chiropractor. While there is a place for prescription drug therapy in treating certain conditions, “suffering through” stress-related ailments isn’t necessary when a chiropractor can work with you to bring some relief.
